This weekend, more than 300 volleyball teams will converge on nearly every piece of sand in Summit County for the 18th annual Putterhead Doubles volleyball tournament. Beginning today at 8 a.m., teams from across the country will compete in 12 divisions scattered between Breck's Carter Park, the surrounding fields of the Breckenrige Recreation Center and sand courts in Silverthorne.

Tournament director Doug Arritola believes that this year's edition of the tournament will easily eclipse last year's total of 299 teams. "Each year, we have really been growing," Arritola said. "It used to be a one-day tournament, and we've added divisions."

Arritola and Volleyball of the Rockies, which took over the Putterhead in 2002, have turned the tournament into one of the four biggest mountain competitions - the other three being in Vail, Steamboat Springs and Aspen. However, Arritola feels that the Putterhead has the advantage over some of the area's other competitions.
"This is the closest one of them all [to Denver]. So we get a lot of people from the Front Range," he said.

One added bonus for volleyballers coming up to the tourney is that each member of the two-person teams receives free food during play, served up by the Summit High School volleyball team. The team is using the tips that they hope to gain from the weekend for fundraising to provide them with funds for their road trips in the upcoming season.

The first division to start play will be the Dinosaur Doubles, which requires teams to have a combined age of 80. As a bonus, for every four years that a team is older than its opponent, it will get an extra point. The division will play all day today at Carter Park.

Starting Saturday morning, the tournament's top players, in the Men's and Women's Open divisions, will begin play. Both divisions will carry over to Sunday. Also on Saturday, the grass divisions will begin play. The co-ed teams play Sunday. Teams from 10 different states, including as far as Oregon and Minnesota, are scheduled to compete.
